Golf attracts visitors, locals

Golf has emerged as a major Central Oregon attraction, drawing visitors and new residents alike. We have compiled a directory listing 29 public and private courses that are complete and ready for play, plus a few other resort courses in the planning stage. They range from a nine-hole par 3 to championship courses that host the Jeld-Wen Tradition, Ghost Tree Invitational and the Pacific Amateur Golf Classic.

The Tradition returns to Crosswater in Sunriver Aug. 11-17, 2008. The Oregon Amateur Championship tournament, the Oregon Golf Assn.'s oldest and most prestigious golf tournament, comes to Bend Golf & Country Club June 16-21, and the Oregon chapter of the PGA will repeat the three Central Oregon events staged last year: the Kah-Nee-Ta Special Pro-Am, the Top Gun Open at Crooked River Ranch, and the Fall Tour of four courses in the area.

There are private courses associated with gated communities and upscale resorts plus a wide selection of municipal, commercial and resort courses open to the public. Many of the latter also offer memberships that confer club privileges or reduced fees, or special packages for resort guests. What they have in common is some of the most spectacular scenery in Central Oregon, which is to say some of the most spectacular on the globe, plus great weather for most of the year.

All golf courses on this list are 18 holes unless otherwise noted. Most are rated as championship courses and many have received accolades from golfing publications and placement on “top golf courses” lists over the years.
