Resorts growing in number
Central Oregon has become the largest and most upscale second home/resort area in the Pacific Northwest outside of Canada and Idaho. No single description applies to destination resorts across the board. The more established cater to a mixture of first and second home owners and rental condos, homes and lodge rooms surrounded by other recreational opportunities such as golf, horseback riding, tennis and swimming.A new generation of upscale resorts is developing around estate home sites, timeshare ownership and/or club membership, luxury amenities and private designer golf courses. These are giving Central Oregon higher visibility at the high end of the resort spectrum.
Under Oregon’s land use restrictions, destination resorts can be sited in designated rural areas but must maintain a specified ratio of permanent homes to guest units not to exceed 2.5:1. Deschutes County has a more restrictive 2:1 ratio in its code.
Following pages provide a look at the current and future destination resort landscape in Central Oregon. All offer various combinations of permanent homes, overnight lodging, restaurants, shops, golf courses and other recreational facilities.
