Bend media recognition: update

Bend and Central Oregon continue to attract an impressive amount of media attention, centering on climate, recreation, lifestyle and business. Here are some of the accolades collected in 2009:
 
NWX in Urban Land Institute finals
NorthWest Crossing has been named by the Urban Land Institute as one of the top 25 finalists in the organization’s Awards for Excellence: The Americas program. The multi-use planned community on Bend’s west side will be featured in a book, Best Practices in Development: 2009 Award Winning Projects, to be released at the ULI fall conference in November.
 
TV adventure show spotlights Bend
Outdoor athletic activities in the Bend area including trail running, rock climbing and paddleboarding are featured in a half-hour episode of XTERRA Adventures, a nationally syndicated TV program. Tourism officials estimate viewership at two million as the episode is repeated through March.
 
Drive to Cascade Lakes, says NatGeo
Choosing “50 Drives of a Lifetime,” National Geographic Traveler included Central Oregon’s Cascade Lakes Highway as a recommended road trip, noting that the area includes “forests, lakes, meadows and prehistoric volcanoes.”
 
Bend tops in mountain biking
Bend was acclaimed as America’s top mountain biking town in the May 2009 issue of Mountain Bike Action magazine. Two editors spent four days in Bend and wrote in praise of access, lodging, weather, friendly locals and variety of trails.
 
Bend in vacation site ‘top 100’
Bend was listed as one of the nation’s top 100 vacation towns in The Great Towns of America, a guidebook published earlier this year. Bend was described as “the heart of one of America’s finest year-around recreation wonderlands.”
 
Good place to start a business, BW says
Business Week earlier this year named Bend as Oregon’s top small city for startups. The magazine selected the best small city in each state based on a formula that included startups and number of small businesses per capita.

  • Sunset, February 2008: Travel feature titled "Find the Best in Bend" related writer's experiences ranging from outdoor winter sports to a restaurant scene "worthy of any big city." Lead sentence: "Whoever visits Bend, moves to Bend."
  • Business Week.com, Nov. 7, 2008: Bend was selected as Oregon’s “best affordable place to raise your kids” on the basis of median family income, schools, household expenditures, crime rates, air quality, job growth, cultural amenities and diversity.
  • Newsweek Inc.'s Budget Travel, October 2008: A comprehensive accounting of Bend cultural, culinary and recreational attractions got additional exposure when CNN.com picked it up later. “In Bend, Portland’s quirky-chic cousin, you can live the high life and get back to nature.”
  • Milken Institute/Greenstreet Partners 2008 list of top-performing cities: The Bend Metropolitan Statistical Area--all of Deschutes County--scored third among MSAs in its size class, down from first the year before. Ratings were indexed to high-tech and overall job growth, wage and salary growth, high-tech GDP growth and concentration of high-tech businesses.
  • Cottage Living magazine: Bend’s NorthWest Crossing picked as one of its top 10 neighborhoods for 2008. The annual selection “celebrates the best places to enjoy life just right—communities where neighborly houses and pedestrian-scaled streets aren’t a thing of the past.”
  • USA Today, July 28, 2008: “It’s a great time to buy a home in Bend, Ore., a popular resort and retirement community,” began a story that drew attention to bargain-level median home prices, a diversified economy, and expectations that a rebound in housing will be supported by the continued appeal of outdoor recreation, climate and scenery.
  • USA Today, May 2008: Bend was described as “the new Boulder (Colo.)” in an article that noted the conversion of second-home owners into full-time residents. “Many buyers lured here by the small city’s outdoor living, natural beauty and mild weather are finding their vacation homes too good to be true and are relocating as full-timers.”
  • Seattle Times: Bend offers “a wealth of options for the discerning beer fan,” declared an article profiling the city’s brewpub choices. Bend pubs are great places to “experience life like a local” after a hard day of biking, rafting or hiking.
  • Fortune Small Business: Bend is one of the 100 best places "that will feed your soul and nurture your business," scoring No. 87 on a list that included three other Oregon cities--Portland, 6th; Corvallis, 48th; and Eugene, 96th. Cities on the list "combine a great business environment with alluring leisure opportunities."
  • Bankrate.com: Bend is on an unranked list of “hot retirement communities” showcased by the business and financial web site. Known for its easy access to adventurous outdoor activities, the Bend area “has a formidable set of local breweries and restaurants, as well as a very strong local arts culture of museums, galleries and theater companies.”
  • American Cowboy: For celebrating the Western lifestyle, Bend was selected as one of the 20 Best Places to Live in the West. “Laid-back Bend is an ideal place to hang your hat,” the magazine noted, citing recreational opportunities such as fishing, skiing, hiking and rafting.
  • CMT Lifestyles, Country Music Television’s web site: Bend received a glowing review as a vacation site “off the beaten path” with favorable climate, scenery, recreation and a revitalized downtown.
2007 summary:
  • The Economist, January 2007: In an article headlined “Booming Bend,” the UK-based publication cited climate, economy and scenery as growth factors.
  • Inc. magazine, May 2007: Bend is No. 10 on an annual list of Top Cities for Doing Business, up from No. 17.
  • Business Week, Oct.  29, 2007: Bend first example among four "hot spots that have cooled" thus enhancing appeal to "savvy" retirees. All are fast-growing communities "blessed with natural beauty and an array of activities."
  • Where to Retire magazine, May/June 2007: Redmond listed as one of the country’s top retirement destinations.
  • Mountain Bike magazine, June 2007: Eleven pages described Bend as a year-around playground for adventure sports athletes.Outside magazine, August 2007: Bend best place to live in the Pacific Northwest among cities with fewer than 100,000 people.
  • Cities Ranked & Rated, second edition, 2007: Bend ranked 56th best city to live in among 400 metro areas in the US and Canada.
2006 summary:
  • Golf Magazine Living, Spring 2006: Pronghorn Club named best new community in the West among 50 best golf communities in America.
  • Robb Report Vacation Homes, Spring 2006: Pronghorn Club among six developments in the United States named the world’s hottest ground-floor investment properties.
  • Newsweek, March 2006: Urbanites attracted to the quiet life helped make Deschutes County one of the fastest growing counties in the country, said the weekly newsmagazine.
  • U.S. News & World Report, June 2006: Prineville was highlighted in an article headlined “Good Riddance to the Rat Race” describing attractive retirement locations.
  • Fortune, July 2006: Trendsetter? On-site airports are the latest in resort amenities, the magazine noted, citing Sunriver Resort as one of three examples. However, the airport has been there since Sunriver opened in 1968.
  • The Wall Street Journal, July 2006: Identifying the most inventive towns in North America based on new patents, the newspaper included Bend among 20 “up and comers” based on 29 patents issued to individuals and small companies.
  • Los Angeles Times, July 30, 2006: Praised Bend in a profile that described recreation, downtown, brewpubs, restaurants and lodging.
  • SkyWest magazine, November/December 2006: Despite growth, Bend retains an outdoorsy ambience with mountains of year-round recreation minutes away, wrote the airline magazine’s editor in chief.
